In Todd Hughes’ 17 Christmases as a Salvation Army minister, he’s seen a lot of generosity. But what happened Tuesday, Hughes says, “blew me away.” A man wearing jeans and a plain gray sweatshirt stopped by the Salvation Army’s Newburyport office and asked about a diamond ring that someone had donated the year before. He asked what the Salvation Army had done with the ring. It was auctioned, Hughes explained. Then the man flashed a gold Rolex. “He showed me the watch,” said Hughes, the commanding officer there. “He unhooked it and took it off his wrist and handed it to me. He said, ‘You know, I feel bad wearing this knowing there are people in need. I want you to use this to help the poor.’ ” Hughes said he was dumbfounded. “I said, ‘I can get it appraised.
