Richmond woman given stiff fine, hefty penalty for Rolex smuggling - The Province

Trying to sneak big-ticket items over the border may end up costing you more than double in penalties what you would have originally paid in duty. That’s what happened to Yan Tao Zhao from Richmond, who failed to declare five Rolex watches at the Vancouver International Airport on her return trip from China on Oct. 22, 2011. The five watches were estimated to be worth more than $50,000 — and if she declared them, it would have cost her almost $9,000. But because she tried to unlawfully import them, she now has to pay more than $20,000. According to spokeswoman for the Canada Border Services Agency, Stefanie Wudel, Zhao only declared $500 in clothing.
