Despite a widely reported patent-suit, Kickstarter-backed Formlabs plans on rolling out beta versions of the Form 1 High-Res 3D Printer soon. In fact, the company has a pre-order facility up and running. What in the world is a 3D printer? Well, as the picture implies, this printer can render in detail (down to 300 microns) whatever you can design on a computer. It reportedly does this via stereolithographic technology in a photopolymer-based process. Basically, a high precision laser is directed across a tray of liquid resin, causing a thin layer to solidify. Thousands of repetitions later, your design will be ready for the world to see, as a fully formed model. The printer comes as a complete package, with software and post-processing kit included.
