Running a marathon is a refreshing way to go off-the-beaten track in a destination you may otherwise see only as a tourist, says Hazel Lubbock. Here are some of the world's prettiest race routes, and where to stay after you've run them. Angkor Wat International Half-marathon This half-marathon course weaves through the temples of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat, which is closed to other visitors during the race so runners get a chance to explore the ancient landmark without the usual crowds. Runners will cross the Siem Reap River, see the stone lions at Bat Chum temple, carvings at Elephant Terrace and the ruins of Ta Prohm, cosseted by silk cotton trees.
