Modest in profile compared to its counterparts in Cannes, Berlin and Venice the Tokyo International Film Festival adds an eastern flavour to the global cinema scene. With 1,332 film entries from 91 countries competing for the coveted Tokyo Sakura Grand Prix, movie buffs can expect a wealth of international cinema. Monocle recommends director Garin Nugroho’s low-budget drama The Blindfold and Benoit Jacquot’s period portrait of life at Versailles on the eve of the French Revolution, Farewell, My Queen.
