Bahnhof Königstein (Railway Station, Königstein) 1916 (above), a solitary figure waits on a station platform as two trains slice dramatically into the scene. A topsy-turvy landscape suggests nothing is stable or even real. This major painting derives from the period shortly before the artist left Germany for Switzerland, in 1917, and is one of an important group that Kirchner made in and of the landscape around Königstein, near Frankfurt, where he had been ordered to enter a sanatorium after being discharged from the army in September 1915.
