The Islands of the Bahamas, especially New Providence, were popular among pirate for several reasons. The islands are close enough to the shipping channels that they could head out to open water to plunder and then retreat back to the islands to hide. There are so many islands, most with treacherous shallows to navigate that it would be unwise for any captain unfamiliar with the area to give chase. There were many famous pirates working the area, but three names stand out. Their careers were generally short, it was a violent, dangerous life.
