Sticky Fingers: Thieves Steal 1/4 of Quebec Maple Syrup Reserves

Sweet-toothed thieves have made away with about US$30.4 million of maple syrup from a Quebec warehouse, a stash that amounts to the loss of more than a quarter of the province's reserves of its famous produce. The surplus is stored each year as a safeguard against shifts in global supply and demand. The loss was discovered late last week when about 10 million pounds of maple syrup, or close to 15,000 oil drum-sized barrels, were found empty at a St-Louis-de-Blandford facility, a quiet town some 100 miles from Montreal. The theft was reported by inspectors from the Federation of the Quebec Maple Syrup Producers. Serge Beaulieu, the Federation’s president, said in a press statement that the group takes the safeguarding of its supply seriously: “The St-Louis-de-Blandford warehouse had been secured by a fence and locks, and visited regularly."
