Bloomberg buys £17m mansion by the Thames

Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has purchased a historic riverside mansion, once owned by novelist "George Eliot," in the Chelsea neighborhood of London for $25 million. The Grade-II listed building, which dates from 1715, overlooks the Thames and is lavishly decorated in period style. Its centrepiece is a sweeping staircase surrounded by elaborately painted walls and a Baroque ceiling mural depicting Venus. It was painted by Sir James Thornhill, whose works also decorate the dome at St Paul's Cathedral. As well as its rich artistic heritage, the 5,000 sq ft property boats an impressive literary history. The novelist Mary Ann Evans - better known as George Eliot - lived in the house until her death in 1880.
