It’s a trek to get to White Sands National Monument (575-479-6124) , located 82 miles north of El Paso, Texas. But what the area lacks in easy access—and, unfortunately, upscale lodging (most choose to stay in chain hotels in Las Cruces, an hour away, or Alamogordo, 15 minutes away)—is made up for by experiencing a landscape virtually unlike anywhere else on earth. There are only a few gypsum dune fields in the world, and the park is one of them. With 275 square miles of sulfate mineral sand, it’s also the biggest by far. (The other two largest, in Texas and Mexico, are about three square miles each.) Snow sports morph into sand sports here: Bring a snowboard or rock skis or buy a round plastic sled from the visitor’s center. The loop area of Dunes Drive, where there is little vegetation, is the place to get active, as the dunes can be up to 30 feet high. The sand is soft ...
