ON JULY FOURTH about a hundred people gathered just before sunset on a barren hillside at a ranch abutting Nevada’s Black Rock Desert to celebrate the birth of our country. It was a familiar-looking crowd: mostly young, mostly scruffy, mostly from the Bay Area. Only this group was armed to the teeth with muzzle loaders,six-shooters, semiautomatics, machine pistols, hand cannons, bolt-action varmint guns, carbines, and an AK-47 machine gun. Packing nothing but my notepad and long past my rebel phase, I clearly didn’t belong. Yet I was drawn to the place for the same reason everyone else was. We were there to experience Burning Man—or rather, some remnant of the original anarchic, pyromaniacal, guns-and-ammo-with-a-side-of-performance-art desert fantasia that has lately been overshadowed by tech-millionaire excess and secondhand-ticket gouging.
