Beijing Bans Luxury Ads in an attempt to preserve societal balance between rich and poor

Beijing has taken to banning all outdoor advertisements for luxury products. This drastic measure was conceived in the hope that it would ease both China's widening income gap and a growing popular groundswell of resentment. In a statement released by the Beijing Administration for Industry and Commerce, all affected businesses will have to remove or modify their ads by April 15, or risk fines of up to 30,000 yuan. Ads that promote ‘foreign’ products have also been targeted, although the statement gives no indication of the exact nature of these ‘foreign’ goods. Under the new ruling, all ads will be stripped of words such as ‘supreme’, ’luxury’, ‘royal’ or ‘high-end’, which Beijing says may contribute to a politically ‘unhealthy’ environment.
