One of the best reviews I wrote so far this year (as in great food, not great writing skills)

Those that have been to Shanghai will be aware that Fa Zu Jie is simply Mandarin for the French Concession, which makes sense as this small private kitchen offers Shanghainese flavours with French presentation and cooking methods. There is no a la carte menu: rather, when guests make a booking with the restaurant, they are emailed a rather cryptic menu (example of a dish name: “Miss Quail. Mr. Sanuki. Wax Apple. Wolfberry. All are Half Drunk.”) which is accompanied by a more helpful explanation of each dish to make sure guests are not allergic to any of the ingredients. So far, so sceptical. However, once the first course arrived, all our cynicism vanished. A martini glass containing jelly made from Jinjiang vinegar with sea whelk is an excellent starter.
