10 amazing things to do in Malta, one of our top destinations to watch in 2018:
As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Valletta is currently buffing, polishing and cleaning the family treasures in preparation for its role as a City of Culture in 2018, from church facades to statues. Malta has been building pretty amazing structures for about 5,000 years - see the atmospheric, tooth-like neolithic temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra - but one of its most recent was created by an Italian interloper, Renzo Piano. His City Gate project has completely recast the grand entrance to Valletta on a scale the Egyptian pharaohs would appreciate, with huge limestone slabs, intricately chiselled windows and sweeping outdoor staircases aside the angled city gateway. It’s best experienced during the sunset passeggiata , when it glows in the dying light.
